Selecting the Proper Spindle

Eltool Spindles: Because commercially available collets are never as compact as possible we developed "Eltool" style spindles designed to minimize the profile of the angle head. They employ our proprietary collets which draw up from the rear of the head with a screw. (much like a tiny R8 collet)

Draw Type Eltool Collet Size 1D, 1M = max. capacity .130
Draw Type Eltool Collet Size 1D, 1M = max. capacity 3.3mm

Draw Type Eltool Collet Size 2D, 2M = max. capacity .156
Draw Type Eltool Collet Size 2D, 2M = max. capacity 4mm

ER Spindles: Where space allows, a commercially available ER-type spindle is generally the best choice. It will have more diametrical capacity, a wide range of sizes and is available from your local tool suppliers. It is not as compact and the minimum bore size the head will fit into will increase.

Size 1M = ER-8 (.188 max. capacity)
Size 1M = ER-8 (5.0mm max. capacity)

Size 2, 2M, 3 = ER-11 (.265 max. capacity)
Size 2, 2M, 3 = ER-11 (7.0mm max. capacity)

Size 3M = ER16 (.406 max. capacity)
Size 3M = ER16 (10.0mm max. capacity)

Taperlock Spindle: Is like a tiny Morse taper. The shank of the cutting tool is held in place by the binding action of the tapered spindle. Special geometry is required on the tool shank when using this spindle, as shown below.

Taperlock = Size 1D, 1M

Weldon style spindles: are a straight bore with a set screw from the side. They are very compact and allow for a larger diameter tool shank than do collet style spindles. They are not as versatile however as the shank size of the tool has to match the bore in the spindle which does not change.

Size 1D Weldon 1/8
Size 1D Weldon 3.3mm

Size 1M Weldon 1/8, 3/16, 1/4
Size 1M Weldon 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm

Size 2D Weldon 3/16, 1/4, 5/16
Size 2D Weldon 5mm, 6mm, 8mm

Size 2M Weldon 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8
Size 2M Weldon 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm

Size 3M Weldon 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2
Size 3M Weldon 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm
